Yogi Cabinet Approves ₹10,761 Crore Ganga Expressway Extension to Haridwar: A Major Boost for Connectivity and Tourism

In a landmark decision aimed at bolstering regional infrastructure and spiritual tourism, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has officially approved the proposal to extend the Ganga Expressway all the way to Haridwar. This major greenfield infrastructure project will create a high-speed, seamless transit corridor linking two of India's most revered spiritual hubs situated along the banks of the sacred Ganga river.

Project Cost and Greenfield Design

The ambitious extension will be developed as a modern six-lane access-controlled expressway, with structural provisions designed for future expansion to eight lanes. The total estimated expenditure for the project stands at ₹10,761 crore. According to state officials, the entire financial outlay will be funded by the Uttar Pradesh state government without any central government financial participation. Following this key cabinet endorsement, administrative preparations including detailed project drafting will proceed.

Transforming Connectivity for Bijnor and Beyond

Currently, the primary transit route connecting Bijnor district—situated along the Uttarakhand border—to Haridwar is National Highway 34 (Meerut-Bijnor-Haridwar Highway). The newly approved extension of the Ganga Expressway will provide Bijnor with significantly faster, smoother, and more reliable connectivity to Haridwar.

Furthermore, the expressway corridor will vastly improve Bijnor's transit linkage to the state capital, Lucknow. This enhanced connectivity is expected to act as a powerful catalyst for trade, industrial investment, and broader economic activity across the region.

Bridging Two Great Kumbh Cities

By extending the expressway network, travelers and pilgrims will benefit from an uninterrupted transit corridor directly connecting Prayagraj and Haridwar. Because both cities are major hosts of the sacred Kumbh Mela, the upgraded infrastructure will ease travel for millions of devotees, cutting down travel time significantly and ensuring comfortable journeys.

Boosting Religious Tourism and Employment

State officials anticipate that the enhanced expressway link will provide a substantial boost to spiritual tourism across northern India. Improved access is expected to stimulate local hospitality sectors, trade, and tourism-based economic activities in Haridwar, Bijnor, and the various connecting districts along the route. Additionally, construction activities and subsequent regional development are projected to generate new direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth.
