Yatri Rahat Yojana: Yogi Government Distributes Over ₹17.33 Crore to Bus Accident Victims Over Nine Years

The Uttar Pradesh government's comprehensive Passenger Relief and Safety Scheme, widely known as the Yatri Rahat Yojana, has emerged as a crucial financial safety net for families affected by accidents involving buses operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). Over a span of nine years, the state administration has successfully disbursed more than ₹17.33 crore to support victims and their dependents, ensuring dignity and timely assistance during times of crisis.

Expanding Financial Support Across Nine Years

Between the financial years 2017-18 and 2025-26, substantial financial compensation has been channeled through 342 documented cases involving fatalities and injuries. In comparison to previous years—such as 2015-16 and 2016-17, when ₹40 lakh was disbursed across eight death cases—the scale and outreach of the relief mechanism expanded significantly under the current administration.

Peak disbursement years included 2019-20, which saw roughly ₹3.68 crore distributed across 78 cases, alongside consistent annual allocations reaching ₹1.97 crore across 27 cases in 2025-26. Transport Corporation officials emphasize that alongside financial relief, continuous monitoring of driver safety and fleet maintenance remains a top priority to minimize road accidents.

Compensation Structure for Fatalities

The scheme outlines distinct financial provisions depending on the category of the victim, ensuring immediate support for grieving families:

• Adult Passengers: ₹7.50 lakh in the unfortunate event of death.

• Children (Half-Ticket Holders): ₹3.75 lakh.

• Minor Children (Free Travel Under Corporation Rules): Approximately ₹1.87 lakh.

These structured payouts provide essential interim stability, particularly when an accident claims the life of a primary earning member.

Relief Provisions for Injured Passengers

Recognizing the immense medical burdens associated with road mishaps, the scheme offers tiered financial assistance for injured travelers:

• Immediate Advance Relief: Up to ₹10,000 for minor injuries and up to ₹25,000 for serious injuries to cover immediate medical treatments.

• Extended Medical Claims: If treatment costs exceed initial advances, additional processing is facilitated using certified medical bills and recovery certificates issued by the concerned Chief Medical Officer.

• Maximum Severity Limits: Upper caps are established at ₹25,000 for minor injuries, ₹1,00,000 for serious injuries, and up to ₹2,50,000 for severe injuries or burn cases involving more than 50% of the body.

Broadening the Scope: Non-Passengers Now Included

In a major policy expansion implemented in April 2026, the Yatri Rahat Yojana extended its protective umbrella beyond bus passengers. Pedestrians and external citizens who are injured or lose their lives in accidents involving a UPSRTC or contracted corporation bus are now eligible for compensation.

Under this updated provision, non-passengers can receive up to ₹5 lakh in the event of a fatality and up to ₹2.50 lakh for serious injuries. However, payouts are contingent upon investigation reports; if police or Transport Corporation inquiries establish direct negligence on the part of the external individual, compensation claims under this category will not be processed.
