Uttar Pradesh Soars to Second Place Nationally in PM Surya Ghar Yojana
Uttar Pradesh has achieved a landmark milestone in its transition to green energy, officially securing the second spot in the country under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme. Under the proactive leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has surpassed Maharashtra, trailing only Gujarat in the national rankings. With a staggering 674,393 domestic rooftop solar installations now operational, the state is rapidly transforming its energy landscape, turning millions of households from mere power consumers into proactive energy producers. This surge is the result of streamlined government processes, including high-level monitoring, efficient subsidy distribution, and seamless coordination between discoms and local agencies.
A Gigawatt-Scale Energy Revolution
The sheer scale of this transformation is evident in the numbers: Uttar Pradesh has successfully developed approximately 2,283.8 megawatts (2.28 gigawatts) of domestic rooftop solar capacity. According to UP NEDA Director Ravinder Singh, this initiative is providing direct relief to millions of families, who are now benefiting from free solar power valued at roughly ₹6.5 crore every single day. By reducing dependency on conventional grid electricity, citizens are not only slashing their monthly utility bills but are also contributing excess power back to the grid, effectively pioneering a decentralized energy economy across the state.
Economic Growth and Job Creation
The widespread adoption of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana has acted as a catalyst for a robust new solar ecosystem. Currently, over 7,000 companies are operating within the state’s solar sector, providing direct and indirect employment to more than 85,000 individuals. This employment boom spans across diverse skill sets—from technical engineering, surveying, and net metering to logistics, sales, and long-term maintenance. The rising demand for solar modules, inverters, and mounting structures has also invigorated the local manufacturing and supply chain sectors, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a growing hub for industrial development and green entrepreneurship.
Environmental Impact and Land Preservation
Beyond economic benefits, this solar push is a significant victory for environmental sustainability. The rooftop model has effectively saved over 9,000 acres of land that would otherwise have been required for large-scale, ground-mounted solar farms, ensuring that valuable land remains available for agriculture and urban development. Furthermore, the state’s clean energy production is curbing approximately 2.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. To visualize the environmental impact: this reduction is equivalent to the carbon sequestration of over 12 crore mature trees each year, placing Uttar Pradesh at the forefront of India’s national net-zero objectives and global climate change mitigation efforts.
