In a major welfare decision aimed at empowering women and easing daily mobility, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has officially approved free travel for women aged 60 and above on ordinary buses operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). Fulfilling commitments outlined under the Public Welfare Resolution 2022, this initiative is designed to provide substantial financial relief and enhanced travel convenience to senior women across the state.
Benefiting Thousands of Daily Women Travelers
State estimates indicate that approximately 88,438 women travelers stand to benefit from this free travel facility every single day. By eliminating daily travel expenses for elderly women who rely on public transportation for personal, medical, or routine visits, the government aims to foster greater social mobility and independence for senior citizens.
Special Smart Cards for Seamless Identification
To ensure systematic implementation and prevent misuse, the Transport Corporation will issue special smart cards to eligible women passengers aged 60 and above. These smart cards will serve as official identification, enabling a smooth and hassle-free ticketing process on all ordinary UPSRTC buses across the state.
Monthly State Expenditure and Commitment to Welfare
Implementing this extensive public transport concession involves an estimated financial expenditure of ₹22.55 crore per month for the state government. Through this substantial investment, the Yogi administration continues to prioritize the safety, dignity, and accessibility of women, extending structured welfare support directly into public transportation services.
