Many factors directly impact our eye health. Sleep is one such factor, which has a profound impact on the body and overall health. The quality of sleep we get has a profound impact on eye health. To learn more, we spoke with Dr. Anita Sethi, Principal Director and HOD of Cataract, LASIK, and Oculoplasty at Max Multi-Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park. Why is good sleep important for the eyes?

Doctors explain that sleep is a time when our bodies recover from the day's fatigue and the cells actually repair themselves. Similarly, the lubricating tear film around our eyes becomes slightly dry and damaged due to the day's fatigue . So, when we sleep at night, we close our eyes, and only then can the tear film repair itself. Therefore, good sleep is essential for proper eye repair.

He further explained that lack of sleep indirectly affects our tear film and causes dry eyes , as people often miss sleep at night or stay up late because they're scrolling on their mobile phones or watching TV. Therefore, excessive screen time, especially in a dark room, puts more strain on the eyes. This makes the eyes more tired and strained, and then you wake up in the morning with a lack of sleep and a lack of lubricating fluid in the eyes.

Therefore, complete sleep is essential

Therefore, 7-8 hours of good sleep is essential for the recovery of the entire body, including the eyes. The body is accustomed to a specific circadian rhythm, meaning you should go to bed around 10-11, maybe 12, and wake up at 8, so wake up after 8 hours. Sleeping at 3 a.m. and waking up at 10 a.m. is not the same for the body. If your sleep timing and pattern are irregular, the body cannot repair itself, recover itself, or refresh itself.
