News Topical, Digital Desk : Do you also have frequent acid reflux or heartburn problems? If yes, then it can not only cause digestive problems but can also cause esophageal cancer. Due to repeated acid reflux, the tissues of the food pipe start getting damaged, which can lead to esophageal cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 22,070 new cases of esophageal cancer were reported in 2025. This disease can be quite challenging, as its early symptoms (Esophageal Cancer Early Signs) are similar to common problems and people often take them lightly. Due to this, by the time its symptoms start appearing clearly, the cancer has reached a very advanced stage. Let us know what are the symptoms of esophageal cancer.

What are the symptoms of esophageal cancer?

In the initial stages, the symptoms can be so common that they are ignored as acidity, heartburn or simple indigestion. Pay attention to these symptoms-

  • Difficulty in swallowing- This is the most important and common symptom of esophageal cancer. Initially, there is difficulty in swallowing solid food like roti, rice etc. Over time, as the cancer grows, there is difficulty in swallowing semi-solids and then liquids. It feels like the food is getting stuck in the throat or chest.
  • Chest pain, burning or pressure - Feeling of pain, burning or pressure in the middle of the chest while eating. This is often   mistaken for heartburn or acid reflux .
  • Sudden weight loss- Rapid weight loss without any effort is also a serious warning sign of esophageal cancer. Due to difficulty in swallowing, the person is unable to eat properly, due to which the body does not get the necessary nutrition and starts losing weight.

Symptoms of the advanced stage

When the cancer grows and spreads to nearby tissues and organs, the symptoms become more severe-

  • Stomach pain or burning sensation – Feeling pain or discomfort in the upper part of the stomach after eating food.
  • Persistent cough or hoarseness: If the tumor is in the upper part of the esophagus or is pressing on the windpipe, a persistent cough or hoarse voice may occur.
  • Vomiting or bleeding- Sometimes vomiting may occur due to difficulty in swallowing food. Vomiting or bleeding with mucus is a serious sign.
  • Fatigue and weakness- Due to lack of blood in the body, one  feels constantly tired, dizzy and weak .
