New Delhi: On August 29, a web series was released on Netflix named IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. It shows the story of those 8 days of terror when this plane going from Kathmandu to Delhi was hijacked.
Why did people object?
This series directed by Anubhav Sinha is being criticized on social media. Although many critics have also praised it, many people say that the names of the alleged kidnappers were changed to Hindu names.
The kidnappers used code words
In fact, according to a statement issued by the Union Home Ministry, the real names of the kidnappers were Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Saeed, Gulshan Iqbal, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistry Zahoor Ibrahim and Shakir for which they were using code words Bhola, Shankar, Doctor, Burger and Chief. On watching the series, you will know that the director has also used the same names in the series which they were using to communicate with each other.
Now, a section of social media has expressed displeasure over the fact that the filmmaker deliberately named the kidnappers as Bhola and Shankar even though they were Muslims.
The story is based on the book
The story of this series is taken from the book 'Flight Into Fear: The Captain's Story' written by journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury and Devi Sharan (captain of IC 814 flight). Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Vijay Verma, Dia Mirza, Arvind Swami, Divyendu Bhattacharya and Kumud Mishra also appeared in important roles.
