News Topical, Digital Desk : Now you can cure your diabetes through a two-hour surgery. This is the claim of Dr. Manjunath, Additional Professor in the Department of Surgery at AIIMS. He stated that 35 patients underwent this surgery in the past year, and all were cured of their diabetes. A Member of Parliament is among those cured by the surgery.
The results of this experiment on patients have become a topic of discussion, as recovery is rapid and patients are able to return home within 24 hours. This technology offers hope at a time when diabetes is rapidly increasing in the country. India today has one of the world's largest diabetic populations, with approximately 100 million people suffering from diabetes. Poor diet, low physical activity, stress, lack of sleep, obesity, and a family history of the disease are major reasons for this rapid increase.
What are the results achieved so far in the new surgery at AIIMS?
- AIIMS surgeon Dr Manjunath and the hospital department say that they performed a special type of surgery on 35 diabetic patients, the results of which were very effective.
- This entire surgery is completed in just 2 hours.
- Patients do not need to be hospitalized for a long time. They can return home within 24 hours.
Which patients are eligible for this surgery and which are not?
According to doctors, this surgery was originally intended to treat obesity, but now it can also treat diabetes. AIIMS clarified that this specific surgery is not for every diabetic patient.
It is specially designed for those
- The disease has been for a long time
- HbA1C consistently greater than 7.5
- Sugar control is not achieved even after three medications
This surgery should not be done in patients who
- Those who have had diabetes for more than 15 years
- Those who require up to 100 units of insulin
How is the surgery done?
According to doctors, this surgery is performed not on the pancreas but on the stomach and small intestine. Metabolic surgery first involves reducing the size of the stomach and giving it a tube-like shape. This prevents the body's production of various hormones from entering the esophagus. The small intestine is then connected to the modified stomach in such a way that food, after entering the stomach, passes through the duodenum and reaches the anterior intestine.
