News Topical, Digital Desk : The Kerala Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has initiated an investigation into the Rs 50 lakh bribe offered to influence voting during the Wadakkancherry Block Panchayat President election in Thrissur district of Kerala.

The investigation was initiated following the circulation of an audio clip in which Muslim League-backed independent member EU Jaffer allegedly claimed that he was offered money to support the CPM candidate.

Who shared the audio clip?

Jaffer contested the election as an independent candidate with the support of the Muslim League and later voted for the LDF. The controversy erupted after an audio clip was shared on the Facebook page of Congress Vallathol Nagar Block President P.I. Shanavas.

In the clip, Jaffer claims he was offered money in exchange for supporting the CPM candidate in a crucial vote. "If he accepts this offer, his life will be set," the audio says.

Who demanded the investigation?

Based on this revelation, KPCC General Secretary Anil Akkara submitted a formal complaint to the state police chief and the vigilance director, demanding an investigation into the alleged bribery attempt. Acting on the complaint, vigilance officials have now launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.

The alleged bribery case relates to the Wadakkancherry Block Panchayat President election, in which the UDF and LDF won equal seats, seven each. In this politically sensitive situation, the independent member's vote became crucial.
