Guwahati: Indian Railways has introduced an advanced 'water level monitoring system' for the convenience of train passengers, which has been first installed in the Brahmaputra Mail Express, which will undergo a trial run. The system represents a major advancement in water management for long-distance trains, aimed at ensuring continuous and reliable water availability for rail passengers.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that water level indicator, a real-time water monitoring system, has been installed on a rake of Brahmaputra Mail Express at Kamakhya railway station as a pilot project.

Successful implementation of the pilot project could lead to wider applications in other trains as well, significantly increasing the efficiency of water management systems during train travel.

Water problem will be solved in long distance trains

This advanced solution continuously and accurately monitors the water level in the train's water tanks. It uses LoRa and GPRS-based communications, enabling long-distance, low-power wireless data transmission, making it particularly suitable for remote locations, he said.

Sharma said the system features programmable real-time data logging and storage, with data being captured and transmitted through hydrostatic pressure sensors that measure water level with an accuracy of 0.5 per cent in the range of 1 metre to 5 metres.

Will get built-in real-time clock

The system also features a built-in real-time clock to synchronise data logging with an accurate time stamp, thereby aiding in accurate data analysis and ensuring efficient water management. “By ensuring round-the-clock water availability, the water level indicator is set to become an essential tool in maintaining high standards of service on long-distance routes.

The initiative was led by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava at Kamakhya Railway Station, which is located near the headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway. It is the second largest railway station in Guwahati after Guwahati Railway Station. Sharma said that passengers travelling on the Brahmaputra Mail Express can now enjoy a more comfortable journey with the assurance of reliable water supply during their journey.
