New Delhi: State-owned GAIL (India) Limited will start importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) under two new contracts from 2026. The company said that it has added another ship for transportation of the fuel. According to news agency PTI, GAIL India Chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta gave this information on Wednesday.

Deal done with Netherlands and UAE company

GAIL India signed two deals one after the other to import LNG in January this year. The company first signed a deal with Netherlands energy trader Vitol to import 1 million tonnes of LNG for 10 years. Along with this, the company has signed another agreement with ADNOC-Gas of United Arab Emirates (UAE) to buy 5 lakh tonnes of LNG every year.

Supply will start from 2026

Addressing its Annual General Meeting (AGM), GAIL Chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta said, “As a leading natural gas trader, the company recognises the importance of ensuring supply security. Towards this end, we have signed two 10-year LNG supply agreements. Both these agreements are scheduled to commence from the year 2026.

India imports about half of its gas needs, as local production is insufficient to meet demand.
