New Delhi: The government is going to introduce a satellite-based toll collection system. The government has also approved it. It is believed that after the introduction of this new system i.e. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), travelling through toll will become easier than before. After the announcement of this system, many people are confused whether Fastag will be discontinued or will continue.

Will Fastag be discontinued?

CRISIL has clarified that even after the introduction of GNSS system, Fastag will not be replaced, but it is possible that with time Fastag and GNSS systems will work together.

Will there be no toll tax on 20 km?

No toll tax will be charged for a journey of up to 20 kilometres per day on any highway or expressway in the country. However, if someone travels a distance of more than 20 kilometres, then toll tax will be charged from the first kilometre.

How will the GNSS system work?

Satellite and on-board unit installed in the vehicle will be used for toll connection through GNSS system. This system will keep an eye on the vehicle with the help of a network of satellites and will communicate with the on-board unit. This software will calculate the toll. For this, it will match the coordinates of the toll roads and when the vehicle is going. At the same time, a digital wallet will be attached to the on-board unit and money will be deducted from the wallet as soon as you leave the toll road.

Where was its trial held?

GNSS based toll tax has also been trialled. It has been trialled on Bengaluru-Mysore route of NH-275 in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar route of NH-709 in Haryana.
