News Topical, Digital Desk : Amid widespread uproar, Pakistan's parliament on Wednesday approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which expands the powers of Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir.

Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir will now be promoted to the new position of Chief of the Defence Forces and will also formally command the Navy and Air Force. Upon completion of his term, he will remain in office and enjoy lifelong legal immunity.

Approval of constitutional amendment

Amid widespread uproar, Pakistan's parliament on Wednesday approved a constitutional amendment expanding the powers of the country's army chief and limiting the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. The National Assembly passed it with more than a two-thirds majority.

Meanwhile, the opposition has strongly protested the Pakistani government's decision. Opposition parties have called the move "the last rites of democracy." Critics say the move harms democracy.
