Employees retreated after being electrocuted
According to officials, three buildings on two separate plots of land were severely damaged in the devastating explosion. Some of the 75 firefighters at the scene were forced to retreat briefly due to electrocution from downed wires. Debris remains scattered at the scene.
According to a Times of India report, Brittany Maldonado, who lives across the street, said, “We were sitting in the house and suddenly everything shook. Things fell off the walls, and when we looked at the camera, it felt like we were watching a war video.”
Just before the explosion, Pacific Gas & Electric Company received information that an unaffiliated construction crew had damaged an underground gas line. Company workers arrived at the scene to repair the damaged line, but gas was leaking from multiple locations. After approximately two hours of laborious work, the leak was stopped, but the explosion occurred shortly thereafter.
