News Topical, Digital Desk : Ramesh Sippy's film Sholay is one of the cult films of its time, unmatched. No film has ever been made like Sholay, nor will it be in the future. The film recently completed 50 years of its release, and on this special occasion, the makers have made a remarkable decision.
The climax was changed
On December 12th, the 4K version of Sholay - Final Cut will be released in over 1,500 theaters. What's even more interesting is that the film will be re-released without any changes. In fact, due to censorship imposed during the Emergency in India in 1975, the climax was altered before release. This means that the climax version you'll see now will be the original version.
Why was this needed?
The climax you just saw shows Gabbar being arrested by the police, but screenplay writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar originally had a different ending. The original climax was changed due to pressure during the Emergency. During a promotional event for his film 120 Bahadur, Farhan Akhtar explained the original ending and why it was changed.
What was the original version?
Farhan Akhtar explained that in the original climax, Sanjeev Kumar aka Thakur brutally murders Gabbar Singh to avenge his family. He added, "This was the emotional turning point of the film when Thakur plans to avenge his severed hands. We get lost in the friendship between Jai and Veeru, but the real story was about the honest policeman who chases the bandit who ruined his life."
Farhan said, "They had to change it because of the Emergency, and now the original ending is available. Actually, that's the moment when he cries - after crushing Gabbar with his feet." The original ending had to be changed because of the Emergency, but now we will have the original version as well.
