Washington. US Resolution on Pak Election There were reports of irregularities in the recent general elections in Pakistan. The founder of the main opposition party PTI and former PM Imran Khan had also alleged that there was fraud in the elections of Pakistan and Nawaz Sharif's party was made to win by tampering with the vote counting. Meanwhile, Imran now seems to be getting support from America as well.
US Parliament passes resolution on Pakistan's elections
In fact, the US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bipartisan resolution in support of democracy and human rights in Pakistan and called for a "thorough and independent investigation" into claims of interference in Pakistan's 2024 elections. 85 percent of the members of the House participated in it and voted in its favor.
What was presented in the proposal?
- The resolution urged US President Joe Biden to cooperate with Pakistan in upholding democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
- The resolution, HR 901, titled 'Expressing Support for Democracy and Human Rights in Pakistan,' was introduced by Congressman McCormick of Georgia and Congressman Kildee of Michigan and co-sponsored by over 100 colleagues.
America stands with the people of Pakistan
The resolution underlines the importance of upholding democratic values and respecting the rights of the people of Pakistan as they face economic instability and security threats, an official statement said.
The near-unanimous passage of this resolution sends a clear message to the Government of Pakistan that the United States stands with the people of Pakistan in their quest for democracy, free and fair elections, and respect for individual liberties and human rights.
Reaction of Pak government came
The proposal also drew a response from Pakistan's Shahbaz Sharif government. Pakistan's Foreign Office said the bipartisan proposal stems from an "incomplete understanding" of the country's political situation and electoral process. The ministry said we believe the timing and context of this particular proposal does not coincide with the positive dynamics of our bilateral relations.
