South Korean prosecutors filed charges Sunday against impeached President Yoon Suk-yol. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office charged Yoon with rebellion in connection with a Dec. 3 order, Yonhap news agency reported.

This order caused political turmoil in the country. No information has been given by the prosecutors about this so far. Yoon was arrested after being impeached for ordering the imposition of martial law.

The constitutional court will decide

The Constitutional Court is considering whether Yoon should be officially removed from the presidency or reinstated. However, conservative leader Yoon has denied the allegations against him.

While issuing the order to impose military rule, Yun had described the National Assembly as a den of criminals. He had vowed to eliminate North Korea supporters and anti-national forces.

Prosecutors have enough evidence

Prosecutors said in a statement on Sunday that based on the investigation so far, there is no basis to consider any change in the arrest warrant issued against the president. They said there is sufficient evidence to prove the charges.

During a parliamentary hearing, Yoon's commanders testified that they had received direct orders to break down the parliament doors to remove lawmakers sitting inside. However, Yoon has denied this.

Shortly after declaring martial law, Yun reportedly told Hong Jang-won, the former first deputy director of the National Intelligence Service, that he should not miss the chance to arrest 14 political and legal figures, including the opposition leader, and clean up everything.

Had to struggle to get arrested

President Yole had been holed up in his fortified residence for several weeks, surrounded by his security service team, before his arrest. The country's Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), a watchdog for high-ranking officials, first attempted to detain him earlier this month.

Although it failed after several hours of protests, the CIO succeeded in arresting Yoon in its second attempt. But Yoon is refusing to cooperate with any investigation by the CIO.
