Stroke cases are increasing rapidly among the youth, which is emerging as a serious challenge. Earlier it used to affect the elderly, now it is also affecting the youth. Therefore, it is important to understand the reasons behind it (Causes of Stroke in Young People) and symptoms (Stroke Symptoms in Youth), so that attention can be paid to the measures to deal with them.

What is a stroke?

First of all, it is important to understand what a stroke is. Stroke is a condition in which a vein in the brain bursts or gets blocked, causing hemorrhage or bleeding and oxygen stops reaching that part of the brain. Due to this, the cells of that part start dying and body function starts getting affected. If it is not treated on time, the risk of death or paralysis of the person increases significantly.

What are the causes of stroke?

Lifestyle and some health conditions may be responsible for the increasing cases of stroke.

Lifestyle changes

  • Unhealthy Diet – Eating high amounts of fast food, junk food and processed food items increases cholesterol and blood sugar levels, which increases the risk of stroke.
  • Lack of physical activity – The increasing trend of sedentary work and lack of exercise promotes obesity , which is a major cause of stroke.
  • Stress – Persistent stress can increase heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of stroke.
  • Smoking and drinking- Smoking damages blood vessels and drinking alcohol weakens the heart. Both are major risk factors for stroke.

health concerns

  • High blood pressure- Increased blood pressure puts pressure on the blood vessels, increasing the risk of blood clots in them.
  • High cholesterol – High cholesterol causes plaque to accumulate in blood vessels, obstructing blood flow.
  • Diabetes – Diabetes damages blood vessels and raises blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of stroke.
  • Heart Disease- People suffering from any heart disease have a higher risk of stroke.

other reason

  • Taking narcotic medications (drugs) - Taking certain narcotic medications increases heart rate and  blood pressure , which increases the risk of stroke.
  • Sleep Apnea - Sleep Apnea is a condition in which breathing is interrupted during sleep, leading to increased blood pressure and an increased risk of stroke.
