The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was implemented in Uttarakhand on Monday. With this, Uttarakhand has become the first state to do so in independent India. In a program organized at the Chief Minister's residence in Dehradun, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami implemented the UCC by issuing a notification.

Registration started on UCC portal

During this, the Chief Minister launched the rules for its implementation and a portal for mandatory online registration of marriage, divorce, cohabitation. CM Dhami was the first to register his marriage on the UCC portal.

It is essential from the security point of view

CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Monday that under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) implemented in Uttarakhand from today, registration of live-in relationship has been made mandatory from the point of view of the safety of the couple living in the state. After implementing the UCC here, questions are being raised on making the registration of 'live-in' relationship mandatory that it is an attempt to end the privacy of the couple.

As long as the spouse is alive, second marriage is not possible

CM Dhami said that a person of any religion will not be allowed to marry a second time as long as his spouse is alive. He said that daughters in all religions will get equal rights in property. Along with this, he said that live-in relationships will have to be registered. The registrar will inform the parents of the couple. He said that children born from live-in relationships will also get equal property rights.

Registration of 'live-in relationship' is mandatory

CM Dhami stressed that 'live-in relationship' registration has been made mandatory keeping in mind the safety of young men and women. He said, 'Our aim is not to end anyone's privacy but our aim is only and only to give priority to their safety.'

Example given of Delhi's Shraddha murder case

He said that when live-in relationships go bad, fights and violent incidents start taking place between the lovers and many times even murders take place. In this regard, he gave the example of the Shraddha Walkar murder case that happened in Delhi in 2022, in which her live-in partner Aftab cut her body into pieces and allegedly hid it in the fridge.

The details of the couples will be kept confidential

The Chief Minister said, 'It is also our objective that now no Aftab can commit atrocity against any daughter or sister like Shraddha Walkar.' CM Dhami said that the information of the live-in couples who register will be kept completely confidential.
