India's Unified Payments Interface i.e. UPI is famous in the world. This has brought a big change in the way we make payments, and along with it, the spending pattern has also changed. Today people have almost forgotten to carry cash in their pockets. However, two different aspects of increasing the scope of UPI payments have emerged. On one hand, its use is proven to increase people's expenses, while on the other hand, there is a section that is successful in saving through UPI Payment. This picture has become completely clear in a survey by IIT Delhi.
76% of people believed that UPI increased expenses.
A big survey was conducted by IIT Delhi regarding the advantages and disadvantages of UPI Payment. It has been confirmed that UPI is making us spend more than necessary. Out of 276 people included in this survey, the number of respondents who believe that they are spending more because of UPI was 74 per cent. Today, whether you are drinking tea at a shop, buying coconut water, eating in a restaurant or buying groceries for home, the facility of UPI payment is easily available everywhere. In such a situation, people are not giving any importance to carrying cash and this has turned out to be a major reason for the increase in expenditure. The number of UPI users is continuously increasing.
These opinions regarding cash in the pocket:
The survey report says that when we shop in the market with cash in our pockets, the actual cash alerts us to how much we are spending. People say that having cash in hand is a constant reminder of how cautious I should be about spending. Comfort has increased with UPI, he says that earlier a wallet filled in the pocket was a comfort and now the wallet itself has become a bank account and the special thing is that there is always stock in it, which means comfort never ends. Respondents say that people think more while making cash payments of Rs 5x500 notes compared to paying Rs 2500 on UPI.
The reach of UPI is more than that of credit cards.
Before UPI, people had been using plastic money like credit cards for decades, but UPI is different from these credit cards, because firstly, no interest is charged in it. Apart from this, the reach of UPI has become much more than that of credit cards. Mobile-to-bank transfers have also almost eliminated the need for point-of-sale (POS) machines, through which you can make payments through credit or debit cards.
More than 95% considered it a better way of payment
Dhruv Kumar, Assistant Professor at IIT Delhi and students Harshal Dev and Raj Gupta conducted this survey to know the reality of change in people's spending habits through UPI. Using Google Forms, they included 276 people aged 18 and older, from different age groups and business sectors. Professor Dhruv Kumar said in his survey report that 74.2 per centrespondents admitted to experiencing increased expenses after adopting UPI. Meanwhile, 91.5 per cent rof espondents were satisfied with the UPI experience, while 95.2 per cent described UPI as the most convenient for payments.
Savings by getting money directly into bank accounts
However, if we talk about the other aspect of UPI, launched in 2016, its increasing use has also helped a section in saving. According to the report, as cash through UPI transfer is reaching people's banks, a section of Indians are saving. These include everyone from those selling coconut water or tea on carts to local shopkeepers, 90 per cent of whose money is now reaching their bank accounts directly through UPI.
