Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Wednesday that the number of Indian-Americans in elected positions in the US does not reflect their growing population. She said that more and more Indian-origin people should become active in politics.

Kamala Harris said this at the annual conference of the Democratic Party's think tank Indian American Impact. This organization provides support and funding to Indian Americans contesting for elected positions across the country.

A large number of people of Indian origin participated in the US elections

Kamala Harris, the first Indian-origin woman vice president of the US, told a packed room of Indian-origin people that in the last few years, a large number of Indian-origin American citizens have participated in the election process. But still this number does not reflect the true proportion of their growing population.

It is the second largest immigrant community

Currently, there are five elected members of Indian origin in the US Parliament, including Dr. Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamurthy, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal and Shri Thanedar. American Impact believed that in 2024, the number of Indian-Americans in the US Parliament will increase to 10. Regarding the tough competition for the post of President, Indian American Impact says that Indians in America can also influence the election results. This is the second largest immigrant community and their population is constantly increasing in many states of the country.
