On December 3, South Korean President Yun Suk Yeol imposed the shortest martial law in history. It was in force for just a few hours. The president accused South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party of sympathizing with North Korea and being involved in anti-national activities. But now a luxurious handbag from Dior company is being considered the reason behind the martial law. It is being said that because of this bag, the people of South Korea had to face martial law.
Corruption charges against the president
In 2022, Yoon Suk Yeol, who belongs to the People Power Party, won the presidential election. But there are many allegations of corruption against him. His wife Kim Keon has also been in controversies. Opposition parties were attacking him in the corruption case. Amidst the talks of impeachment in the corruption case, Yoon Suk Yeol had to declare martial law in the country. The President's wife has also been questioned in the handbag case. But Yoon Suk Yeol's troubles in the corruption case are not reducing.
The handbag case is of 2022
According to Bloomberg's report, the handbag incident is from 2022. But in South Korea, it made headlines last year i.e. in 2023. After a video surfaced, there was an earthquake in South Korean politics. The opposition claimed that this bag was given to the President's wife Kim as a bribe. The opposition demanded an independent investigation into this. President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife rejected all the allegations. He then said that this gift was a ploy to defame.
The pastor's video caused a stir
The whole controversy started with a video of pastor Choi Jae-young. He shot this video using a camera in his watch. A Dior handbag is visible in the video. At that time, the price of this bag was $2,250 i.e. approximately 1,90,000 Indian rupees. Choi is a critic of the President. He has raised his voice several times against the President's tough stance towards North Korea.
What was shown in the video?
In the video, Choi goes to the office of a planning firm. This firm is run by the President's wife Kim. He gives a shopping bag. It contains a Dior handbag. In the video, Kim also says, why do you keep bringing this? In response, he said, never buy such an expensive thing. A year later, when this video appeared on a website, there was a stir.
The President's wife has been questioned for 12 hours
Kim was questioned for about 12 hours in the handbag case in July this year. The investigation did not find any evidence of any benefit in exchange for the luxurious bag. Kim has also been acquitted of these charges. President Yun Suk Yeol said that this happened only because his wife Kim could not break the relationship with the pastor.
Martial law was lifted in a few hours
After the President's announcement, the army came on the streets. The army was ordered to surround the National Assembly of South Korea at midnight. But this strategy did not work. South Korean MPs were successful in entering the National Assembly. 190 out of 300 MPs unanimously supported the removal of martial law. Later, President Yun Suk Yeol had to step down. Now a total of six parties have filed an impeachment motion against the President.
