The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has brought bad news for North Korea. Ukraine has captured a North Korean soldier. Kim Jong has sent his soldiers to help Russia. These soldiers are helping the Russian army in the war against Ukraine. One of these soldiers is with Ukraine in an injured condition. South Korea's intelligence agency has confirmed this. Now it will be very difficult for Kim Jong to bring his soldier out safely.
Pyongyang has deployed thousands of troops to reinforce Russia's forces, including in the Kursk border region where Ukraine made a surprise border incursion in August.
Ukraine captures wounded North Korean soldier
An injured North Korean soldier has been captured, South Korea's National Intelligence Service said in a statement.
A South Korean intelligence source told AFP that the soldier had been captured by Ukrainian forces, adding that it was not yet known where he was captured. The confirmation on Friday came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said so far nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been "killed or wounded" as they engaged in combat with Russian troops.
South Korea's intelligence service previously put the number of North Korean civilians killed or injured at 1,000 and said the high casualty rate could be due to the unfamiliar combat environment and their lack of ability to counter drone attacks.
Speaking following a briefing by South Korea's intelligence agency last week, lawmaker Lee Seong-kwon said Pyongyang's troops were also being used as front-line assault units.
Russia and North Korea relations are strong!
North Korea and Russia have strengthened their military ties since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
A landmark defense agreement signed between Pyongyang and Moscow in June came into force this month, which Russian President Vladimir Putin described as “an important document.”
North Korean state media said on Friday that Putin sent a New Year message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying bilateral relations between our two countries have strengthened following our talks in Pyongyang in June.
Ukraine's allies have called Pyongyang's growing involvement in Russia's war in Ukraine a "dangerous escalation" of the conflict.
Seoul's military believes North Korea wanted to modernize its conventional warfare capabilities through combat experience gained in the Russia-Ukraine war.
