The security forces had received information about the presence of a large number of Naxalites or Maoists in the Kularighat Reserve Forest of Chhattisgarh. This area is located about five kilometers from the border of Odisha's Nuapada district. After this, the security forces started an operation against the Naxalites on the night of January 19. According to the information, this operation against the Naxalites includes a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG), CRPF from Chhattisgarh and SOG from Odisha.

During the operation on Monday, a large quantity of arms, ammunition and a 'self-loading' rifle were recovered from the encounter site and a landmine was also detected.
