Makhana plants are thorny and lotus-like. Its leaves are lotus-like, circular, which are green from above, but red or purple from below. Its fruits are circular, thorny and soft (spongy). Its seeds are like peas, or slightly bigger than that. Fruits are 8-20 in number and are light black in color. It is eaten raw or roasted. By roasting in sand, it swells, which is called makhana. Makhana is full of nutrition, because magnesium, potassium, fiber, iron, zinc etc. are found in plenty in it.
