Texas: Hurricane Beryl hit the Texas coastal city of Matagorda early Monday with strong winds and heavy rain. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Category 5 storm of the season, which earlier wreaked havoc in parts of the Caribbean, is now expected to weaken rapidly.

More than 1,300 flights affected

At least two people were killed on Monday due to strong winds and torrential rain. The storm closed key oil ports and caused more than 1,300 flights to be canceled. More than 2 million homes and businesses in southeast Texas lost power.

Beryl caused havoc last week too

Hurricane Beryl wreaked havoc in Jamaica, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines last week, killing at least 12 people and causing massive damage to infrastructure. The storm, currently about 70 miles southwest of Houston, is moving northeast at 12 mph. It will hit eastern Texas on Tuesday and Wednesday before moving toward the Lower Mississippi Valley and then the Ohio Valley.
