New Delhi. Many of us may be unaware of the fact that there is a very important relationship between intestinal health and reproductive health. Intestinal health is very important for overall health. Any kind of problem related to gut health affects everything from digestion to immunity and even mental health. The bacteria present in the intestines affect many functions of the body, one of which is reproductive health.

Effect of gut health on fertility

Dr. Parul Gupta, Nova IVF Fertility, Vasant Vihar, explains, 'Gut health plays a very important role in the production of the reproductive hormone, estrogen. Vaginal microbiome changes with age, but most healthy women of reproductive age have the highest concentration of Lactobacillus species. These bacteria increase the density of estrogen in the vagina. This leads to a thicker vaginal discharge and also maintains the pH level. Both of these create a favorable environment for sperm.'

Effects on mother's health

To make the pregnancy journey easier, it is very important to maintain the balance of good bacteria in the intestines during pregnancy. These bacteria improve digestion, help in absorbing nutrients and maintaining a healthy immune system. They also reduce inflammation, which reduces the chances of pregnancy-related problems like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia to a great extent.

Through a balanced diet, probiotics and a healthy lifestyle, the intestines can be kept healthy and problems related to fertility can also be overcome to a great extent. Along with probiotics, also increase the amount of fiber and prebiotics in the diet. Do yoga and exercise regularly and stay away from stress.
