Alzheimer's disease is a disease in which brain cells start getting affected due to the accumulation of amoled beta protein in the brain. Actually, it is a disease of increasing age which increases rapidly when the lifestyle deteriorates. In this, the person's memory, understanding and decision-making ability gradually starts decreasing. In such a situation, on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day 2024, which is celebrated every year on 21 September, Brahmanand Mishra of Jagran has had a special conversation with Dr. Praveen Gupta, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram. Let us know all the important things related to this disease with the help of the doctor.

What are the early symptoms

Talking about its symptoms, a person suffering from Alzheimer's cannot remember words, he cannot call a glass as glass, he starts forgetting the way and even forgets after eating. When the disease becomes serious, he gradually stops recognizing people. Ultimately such a person is not able to take care of himself. He starts forgetting the names of people around him and relatives.

Do problems occur even at young age?

People who start forgetting things at a young age generally do not have Alzheimer's. Actually, due to work pressure or depression, the mind of such people remains busy or they are not able to concentrate completely, hence they have the problem of forgetting. Alzheimer's also occurs at a young age, but it is very rare. Forgetfulness also occurs due to deficiency of vitamin B12 or thyroid imbalance.

When to be alert?

Alzheimer's disease is usually suspected only after the age of 60. Vitamin B12 or thyroid imbalance can cause problems similar to Alzheimer's, but it is not Alzheimer's. Deficiency of B12 and thiamine can cause memory loss.

How is lifestyle responsible?

A major reason behind Alzheimer's is the imbalance in lifestyle. Eating on time, getting enough sleep, being physically active, avoiding food that increases cholesterol, and leading a stress-free lifestyle can prevent the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Working continuously on a screen or being in artificial light affects sleep and disturbs the rhythm. If you get enough sleep, your brain will get rest.

What is the treatment?

Alzheimer's treatment begins after its symptoms become evident and it can also be controlled through cognitive therapy, behaviour therapy, yoga, pranayama and medication.

Important things

  • Try to remain stress free to avoid Alzheimer's and dementia.
  • To keep your mind active, develop a hobby or engage in intellectual activities.
  • Keep sugar and blood pressure under control. Exercise regularly and don't smoke.
  • Avoid fried food, ghee, oil and grease.
  • Eat enough fruits and vegetables, but limit salt intake.
  • Consumption of walnuts and almonds is beneficial.
  • Fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids, which are helpful in keeping the brain healthy.

Good sleep is essential

At least six to eight hours of sleep is necessary. Fix a time for sleeping. Stop looking at the mobile before sleeping. There should be no thoughts in the mind, calm it down and sleep, so that you get a good deep sleep.
