Why is Ganga Dussehra special

According to the legend, once King Bhagirath performed severe penance so that Ganga Maiyya could come to earth and his ancestors could attain salvation. He also got the fruits of his penance and as a result Ganga descended on earth.

But the speed of Ganga was so high that the earth did not have the capacity to bear it. Then Lord Shiva held Ganga in his matted hair and after this it became possible for her to come to earth.
