An important step has been taken today towards a single transmission line across South Asia. For the first time, electricity generated in Nepal has reached Bangladesh through India's transmission line. However, an agreement had already been reached between these three countries in this regard.
In a virtual program on Friday, Power, Housing and Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal, along with Power Ministry Advisor in the Government of Bangladesh Fauzal Kabir Khan and Nepal's Energy Minister Deepak Khadka, launched this power purchase and sale process between the three countries.
All three countries will benefit
This is the first time that India's electricity generated in Nepal has been sent to a third country via the Indian grid. The Indian government has said that this exchange of electricity will promote regional connectivity in the power sector in South Asia.
When former Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda visited New Delhi last year, an agreement was reached to sell 40 MW of electricity produced in Nepal to Bangladesh. This will not only earn foreign currency for Nepal but will also help in overcoming the current power crisis in Bangladesh.
India will also buy electricity from Nepal
India will also get a fee in exchange for infrastructure facilities. India has also announced to buy 10 thousand megawatts of electricity from Nepal in the future. This electricity will be produced from hydroelectric projects in Nepal. Some of these projects will be set up by Indian companies.
