According to a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, drinking very hot tea and coffee regularly can increase the risk of cancer (Esophageal Cancer Risk). Drinks with a temperature of more than 65 degrees Celsius or 149 degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous for health. At the same time, smoking or alcohol also promote esophageal cancer. 

 

This report of IARC is based on a research done in Iran. Researchers found that the risk of esophageal cancer increased by 90 percent for those who drank 700 ml of hot tea every day. The only way to reduce this risk is to drink lukewarm tea or coffee.

Dr. Raman Narang (Senior Consultant - Medical Oncologist, Andromeda Cancer Hospital, Sonipat) said that drinking very hot tea or coffee can increase the risk of Esophageal Cancer. If you are drinking tea or coffee in cold days, it would be better to drink it lukewarm instead of drinking it very hot. It will not harm you in any way. You can make it healthy by adding ginger, cinnamon and honey to tea. These not only enhance the taste but also help in digestion. If you do not want to drink tea or coffee, then herbal tea is also the best option.
