New Delhi: Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that in his 24 years as a judge, he never faced any political pressure from any government. Replying to a question during a session organised by the Oxford Union, he said that courts in India give judgements based on traditions based on constitutional order rather than on immediate emotions. Judges are trained to take decisions in this manner.
never felt the pressure
Justice Chandrachud said, I have been working as a judge for 24 years. I have never faced political pressure from the government. The democratic traditions we follow in India also include that we are independent of the political branch of the government.
What did CJI say on social pressure?
Regarding social pressure, he said that judges often think about the social impact of their decisions. Justice Chandrachud said that many of the cases we decide have a profound impact on society. As a judge, I believe it is our duty to be aware of the impact of our decisions on the social order.
Number of judges is less in India- Chief Justice
Acknowledging the issue of pending cases in courts, he said India has the lowest number of judges in proportion to its population in the world. "We need more judges. We are in talks with the government to increase the strength of the judiciary at all levels," he said.
can accept criticism
On the issue of internet media, Justice Chandrachud said that this is the reality. Every comment made by the judges is reported on the internet media. This is something that we do not need to stop. We cannot even stop it. Obviously sometimes criticism is justified, sometimes criticism is not justified. But I believe that as judges our shoulders are so strong that we can accept criticism of our work by people.
