Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur is the heartbeat of the film and will make you want to call your grandparents. Binny & Family is a story that not only talks about the generation gap but also gives each generation an equal opportunity to get it right. Binny & Family is an emotional film and will bring tears to the eyes of joint family audiences.

Story

Binny and Family begins with the protagonist Binny, played by Anjini. You get to see a free-spirited 12th grade student who lives in London and writes and directs plays for her school. She has an Upper East Side high-maintenance best friend pub goer (played by Ravi Multani) who is not only brand-obsessed but also plays the role of a perfect friend in every situation. Binny lives with her parents in a two-room house in London and sometimes stays with them in her room when her Bihari grandparents come to visit her. Rajesh Kumar and Charu Shankar play the supportive and understanding parents who try to be the support of the family.

The story moves forward when once again Binny's grandparents, played by Pankaj Kapoor and Himani Shivpuri, move to London and the little one has a hard time adjusting to the change. Things take a turn when Binny's crush Dhruv Singh, played by Tai Khan, breaks her heart and she fails to handle the situation. She not only runs away from her home for a night but also puts her father in a tough situation where he prioritises her feelings over her mother's ill health. We then get to see one of the most difficult scenes in the film when Binny's grandmother dies and she leaves behind a family that is confused in terms of their understanding. Does Binny get a chance to put her point across to her baba, does Rajesh's character get the recognition he deserves, does Binny and the family finally get together, watch the film in theatres to get the answers.

Writing and Direction
Director Sanjay Tripathi presents an engaging story and narrative that speaks to practically every generation. The filmmaker shows complex relationships in the simplest and loveliest way possible. Apart from talking about joint family relationships, Binny and Family takes a dig at young people and Generation Z who lead a pretentious life and share everything digitally for likes on social media sites, feeling hollow and lonely from within. However, the writing of Binny and Family could have been better. Some scenes seem too dragged and some abrupt cuts and blackouts of the screen hamper the overall experience. One could also expect some more powerful dialogues in some instances, however, the music of the film makes up for it. Vishal Mishra's song 'Zindagi' and Sunidhi Chauhan's 'Kuch Humare' deserve appreciation. They set the tone of the film correctly.

Performances
Anjini Dhawan makes an impressive debut as Binny. She has the range and carries the emotional part of the film well. However, in some scenes it seems as if she is just acting, not living the character. But in the emotional confrontational scenes towards the end of the film she smashes it out of the park. One can hope that the actor evolves in his next films and proves to be a better choice than some of the new-age actors. Pankaj Kapoor is the main character in the film, despite being in a supporting role, he takes over the scene every time he comes into the frame. The veteran actor brings everything to the fore and leaves you with no choice but to sob. Rajesh Kumar is wonderful as the Bihar-born son who talks about the middle-class perspective of a son and father. How they always try to bridge the gaps but also cause damage. The film does not glorify the act of a father but shows it from a human perspective. Charu Shankar and Himani Shivpuri are good mothers and showcase different perspectives of mothers from different generations.

Nirnay
Binny & Family blends good will with unseen wrongs. This family film is for Indian families to watch together and open up. It sparks conversations that need to be addressed and brings forth topics that we need to pay attention to. The film not only talks about the dynamics of grandparents and grandchildren relationships but also talks about children and parents relationships from the perspective of generational differences. Its dialogues like 'Pyaar saari bhaagik seer se parekh hai' and 'zindagi ki expiry date to hoti hai par zindagi jeene ki nahi' will stay with you for a long time. Overall, the film has its heart in the right place and easily deserves 3 stars.
