HTS Takes Command on Syria: After the sudden fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, Syria's future depends on instability. The Assad regime, once considered invincible, has been demolished by a massive attack by Syrian rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was earlier known as al-Nusra, which had direct links with al-Qaeda.
Bashar al-Assad took over the rule of Syria in 2000 after nearly three decades of strong rule by his father Hafiz al-Assad. At the beginning of Bashar al-Assad's rule, people had hopes that Bashar would bring reform, change and openness to Syria. However, Bashar maintained his father's oppressive governance structure and his harsh policies and rules. Due to which these hopes of the people were soon shattered.
The 2011 protests leave a dark stain on Bashar's legacy
Syria's ousted former president Bashar al-Assad's legacy will be darkened by his response to the 2011 protests that spiraled into a bloody civil war. These protests left more than 500,000 dead, nearly 6 million refugees and countless more displaced.
Russia and Iran were busy in the war and could not help Assad
Currently, Russia and Iran are busy in their own conflicts. While Russia is fighting a war with Ukraine, Iran is facing its regional challenges. This is the reason why both countries could not provide significant support to Assad in this very difficult time. Taking advantage of this situation, the rebels captured major cities of Syria like Aleppo, Hama and Homs in a few days and then started moving towards Damascus.
