The Supreme Court has dismissed the review petition filed against the closure of Vedanta Group's copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Earlier on February 29, the court had dismissed Vedanta's petition to reopen the copper smelting plant in Tuticorin. The plant has been closed for almost 6 years due to pollution concerns. The court kept in mind the importance of the health and well-being of local residents while giving its verdict.
The plant has been closed since May 2018. At that time, 13 people were killed in police firing to suppress protests against alleged pollution.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud (now retired) and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra also rejected Vedanta's application to list the review petition in open court. The bench said in its order of October 22, "After carefully looking at and understanding the review petitions, no error appears on record. No case for review has been established under Order XLVII Rule 1 of the Supreme Court Rules 2013. Therefore, the review petitions are dismissed."
