The market for fairness creams in India is very big and this type of creams is quite popular among the people. Many people use whitening creams in their daily lives. But two serious cases related to fairness cream have come to light which are raising questions on the use of such cream.
Two people from Raigad, Maharashtra have developed kidney disease due to the use of fairness cream. 24-year-old Namita Shinde (name changed) has been applying a fairness cream on her face for the last 8 months. He was told about the cream by a local doctor.
Similarly, 56-year-old Ramesh More (name changed) has also applying fairness cream for the last 3-4 months. Her barber had asked her to apply the cream to become fair.
Body swells after applying cream
It was written on the labels of both the creams that they contain natural ingredients. After applying the cream, the patients started experiencing swelling, after which they reached Medicover Hospital in Navi Mumbai for treatment.
Dr. Amit Langote, head of the kidney department at the hospital, said, 'We noticed that both the patients had swelling in their bodies and the amount of protein in their urine was high. We found that he had kidney failure and NELL-1 antigen was also found. Toxic and heavy metals that lighten the complexion were also found in the kidneys.
The doctor further said, 'After this, we immediately examined the male patient for cancer. We noticed that the amount of mercury in the patient's blood was high. We started his treatment after which the amount of protein in his urine started reducing and his kidneys started functioning properly.
While talking to Times of India, Dr. Langote said that he is also treating the female patient. He said, 'The female patient was also tested for NELL-1 antigen and it turned out to be positive. The woman said that she was applying a foreign fairness cream on the advice of a local doctor, due to which the level of mercury in her blood increased. The woman is also undergoing treatment.
The doctor warned about fairness cream
The doctor says that many people use creams that are not approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and suffer the consequences. These creams contain high amounts of mercury which suppresses melanocytes in the skin and lightens the dark complexion. People making cream at home, without worrying about the harm of mercury, use mercury in abundance in their cream.
The use of fairness cream made from mercury has adverse effects on kidneys and overall health. Doctors advise that people should use only creams approved by the FDA so that there is no adverse effect on health.
If someone wants to apply fairness cream then he should first consult a good doctor on this. The doctor should also be asked about the side effects of fairness cream.
