Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that his country wants permanent membership of India, Brazil and African countries in the United Nations Security Council. He said, this is necessary for the representation of the world's plurality in the global institution. Lavrov said that the need to include these countries with regional prominence in the Security Council has been felt for a long time.

Speaking to a website, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that countries like India, Brazil, as well as representatives of Africa should have been permanently in the Security Council for a long time. This is necessary to ensure representation of the global majority.

China, one of the permanent members of the United Nations, is creating hurdles against India

It is known that India has been demanding reforms in the Security Council for a long time. It has been expressing the need to increase the number of permanent and temporary members. The Security Council, formed in 1945, has had 15 members since its inception. Five of these are permanent and 10 are temporary. America, France and Britain have already supported India's claim for permanent membership in the Security Council. But China, one of the permanent members, is creating hurdles in this.

Last month, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron in backing India for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). India last sat at the UN high table as a non-permanent member in 2021-22. There is a growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.

There was talk of supporting India

This is not the first time that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has spoken out in favour of India. In his address to the 79th United Nations General Assembly, he emphasised that a fair world order requires expanding representation of the Global South in the UNSC and expressed Russia's support for India and Brazil's bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

Lavrov said this

Lavrov had said that we are not retreating from dialogue with the West. In July, on Russia's proposal, an open debate was held in the Security Council on the topic of building a more just, more sustainable world order. We believe it is important to resume the discussion that has begun in the United Nations as well as in other forums. A fair world order undoubtedly requires expanding the representation of the Global South in the UN Security Council.
