
News Topical, Digital Desk : It has been decided to ban 26 social media sites including Facebook, WhatsApp and X in Nepal. The Government of Nepal has issued an order to the Telecommunication Authority in this regard.
According to news agency ANI, Nepal had given an ultimatum to all social media companies to register. Despite this, the companies did not show interest. After the deadline was over, the government has decided to ban them.
TikTok had registered
The meeting on Thursday was attended by Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, ministry officials, representatives of the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, telecom operators and internet service providers. It was decided in the meeting that all unregistered platforms will be banned with immediate effect.
Currently, platforms like Viber, TikTok, Vtalk and Nimbuzz are registered in Nepal, while the cases of Telegram and Global Diary are in process. Widely used platforms like Facebook, Twitter (x) and WhatsApp have not started registration yet. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has clarified that this ban will be applicable across the country.
These platforms got banned
In fact, the Supreme Court of Nepal in an order had asked for mandatory listing of online and social media platforms of domestic or foreign origin and evaluation and monitoring of unwanted content. After this, the cabinet had issued a 7-day ultimatum.
The ban will apply to all other major social media and communication platforms including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Reddit, Discord, Pinterest, Signal, Threads, WeChat, Quora, Tumblr, as well as social media platforms like Clubhouse, Rumble, Mi Video, Mi Vike, Line, Imo, Zalo, Soul and Hamro Patro.
