Sri Lankan Navy Apprehends 7 Rameswaram Fishermen in Palk Bay

In another mid-sea enforcement action along the Palk Strait, the Sri Lankan Navy intercepted and detained seven Indian fishermen hailing from the coastal town of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters. Alongside the arrest of the crew, the naval patrol impounded their mechanized fishing boat and confiscated the on-board gear. Following their apprehension, the fishermen were produced before a Sri Lankan magistrate on Sunday, November 1, 2026, who remanded all seven individuals to judicial custody until November 13, directing them to Vavuniya Prison and reigniting deep anxiety among coastal fishing hamlets across the Ramanathapuram district.

Mid-Sea Interception off Talaimannar: Mechanized Vessel 'John Mervin' Impounded

The mid-sea confrontation unfolded during a routine weekend fishing expedition that saw approximately 2,500 fishermen set sail from the Rameswaram fishing harbor on Saturday aboard nearly 400 mechanized vessels. While the fleet was navigating marine waters near Talaimannar in the Palk Bay region, a patrol unit of the Sri Lankan Navy intercepted a mechanized trawler identified as the John Mervin. Naval personnel boarded the craft and took seven fishermen into custody, formally identifying them as Plasius, Alagu Pandi, Antony Pichai, Rabin, Nelson, Arulnanda Xavier, and Sagaya Anand, before taking physical possession of the vessel and steering it toward the northern coastline.

Custody Handover at Mannar Naval Camp and Remand to Vavuniya Prison

Following the operation, the detained fishermen and their seized boat were transported to the Mannar Naval Camp for preliminary maritime questioning and security documentation. Sri Lankan naval authorities subsequently handed over the seven crew members to local fisheries department officials for statutory booking under the island nation’s maritime and fisheries laws. Upon being produced before the jurisdictional magistrate court on Sunday, the bench ordered them remanded to judicial custody until November 13, 2026, leading to their immediate transfer to Vavuniya Prison as local mechanised boat owners' associations in Rameswaram appealed for swift diplomatic intervention through the Ministry of External Affairs to secure their repatriation and the release of their confiscated vessel.
