Authorities have confirmed that the death toll has reached 39, with Vice Mayor Ding Wei noting that a significant portion of the fatalities resulted from a dam burst in the city of Nanning. The storm, which pounded the Guangxi region, has left a trail of destruction, displacing millions and prompting an emergency response of massive proportions.
Record-Breaking Rainfall and Dam Collapse
The Chinese Meteorological Department reported unprecedented precipitation across southern Guangxi, with some districts recording staggering rainfall levels exceeding 90 centimeters. The sheer volume of water overwhelmed local infrastructure, causing multiple dams to fail and sending torrents of water surging into urban centers. Thousands of residents found themselves trapped in their homes for days as floodwaters rose to critical levels, cutting off entire neighborhoods and creating a logistical nightmare for emergency responders.
Massive Multi-Agency Rescue Operation
In a race against time, the administration launched a large-scale recovery effort to mitigate the humanitarian crisis. To date, approximately 130,000 people have been successfully evacuated to safety. Power restoration has been a key success, with electricity returned to nearly 60,000 homes.
