News Topical, Digital Desk : World AIDS Day is celebrated every year on December 1st to raise awareness about AIDS, break the stigma associated with it, and improve treatment. AIDS is a very dangerous disease for which there is currently no cure.

AIDS weakens a person's immune system to such an extent that the body becomes unable to fight even minor infections. This leads to increased infections and ultimately death. Therefore, AIDS prevention and control are crucial. But do you know why World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1st and what this year's theme (World AIDS Day 2025 Theme) is?

The journey of the beginning

There was a lack of awareness about AIDS, and many myths had taken root in people's minds. Therefore, there was a need to raise awareness about this disease. Recognizing this need, James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter conceived the idea of a global awareness day. Their goal was to establish a day that would educate and educate people about this deadly disease.

Why was the day of 1st December chosen?

Keeping this in mind, World AIDS Day was celebrated for the first time on December 1, 1988. A major reason for its inception was that at that time, this date was considered a 'neutral' option, away from elections and Christmas holidays, so that maximum public attention could be attracted. In 1996, the reins of this program were taken over from the World Health Organization and passed to UNAIDS, a specialized organization of the United Nations. Since then, UNAIDS has set a specific theme for this day every year, which sets the direction of global efforts.

Theme for the year 2025

Like every year, a special theme has been chosen for World AIDS Day. This year's theme is Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response. This theme was chosen keeping in mind the goal of eliminating AIDS by 2030. This theme reminds us that as long as gaps in access to health services, education, and opportunities persist, it will be difficult to stop the spread of AIDS.
