News Topical, Digital Desk : The biggest reason for the contradictions in Ravana's personality is his birth and lineage. According to mythology, Ravana's father was Maharishi Vishrava, son of the great sage Pulastya and a highly learned Brahmin. Meanwhile, Ravana's mother, Kaikasi, was an Asura (demon) princess. A look at the pages of Valmiki Ramayana reveals that Ravana's becoming a demon was not a coincidence, but the result of a deep ambition and his upbringing. Furthermore, the story of "Swarna Lanka," a symbol of his wealth, is also linked to his own brother, Kubera.
Why 'Demon King' despite being from a Brahmin clan?
According to the Uttara Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana , Ravana, as the son of the sage Vishrava, inherited immense knowledge of the Vedas, scriptures, and music. He was a high-ranking Brahmin. However, his mother, Kaikasi, raised him with the aim of restoring the glory of the Asuras and defeating the gods. Ravana adopted his mother's values and the Asura nature (arrogance and display of power). Having received a boon from Brahma through his rigorous penance, he misused his power and assumed leadership of the Asuras, earning him the title of Asura Raj.
How did you get the golden Lanka?
According to the Padma Purana, the story behind the Golden Lanka is linked to Ravana's half-brother, Kubera. Lanka was originally built by Lord Vishwakarma for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to legend, Shiva invited Maharishi Vishrava (Ravana's father) to perform a housewarming ceremony. Shiva gave the Golden City to Vishrava as a gift.
Rule of Kubera
Vishrava passed the city to his eldest son, Kubera, the treasurer of the gods. Kubera ruled Lanka for a long time. When Ravana was at the peak of his powers, he attacked Kubera at the instigation of his mother and maternal grandfather (Sumali). Ravana defeated Kubera in battle, exiled him from Lanka, and forcibly captured the golden Lanka. He also seized Kubera's divine vehicle, the Pushpaka Vimana.
