News Topical, Digital Desk : Ovarian cancer is a serious cancer that occurs in women. Many women around the world are affected by it and many have lost their lives due to it. In order to spread awareness about this serious disease, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated every year in the month of September.

On this occasion, today we will tell you why there is often a delay in identifying ovarian cancer. Also, we will know why its symptoms are considered to be a period-related problem.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

The doctor explains that the symptoms of ovarian cancer are commonly known as menstrual problems, as diagnosis is delayed due to its similar symptoms. Common symptoms of ovarian cancer include:-

  • Frequent bloating: Persistent bloating that doesn't go away isn't always related to periods. Sometimes bloating can be a sign of ovarian cancer.
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain: Persistent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis that doesn’t go away, other than period cramps, may be a sign of ovarian cancer.
  • Difficulty in eating or feeling full quickly: Do not take it lightly even if you have less appetite or feel full after eating a small amount.
  • Urine problems: Frequent or sudden urination is also a major symptom of this disease, which is often mistaken for a urinary tract infection or other less serious conditions.
  • Period problems: Changes in period patterns, including heavy bleeding, spotting between periods, or bleeding after menopause are symptoms.
  • Fatigue and weakness: Persistent weakness that does not go away with rest should not be ignored.
  • Weight loss:  Weight loss  is another symptom that is often overlooked. However, it is one of the important symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Why are the symptoms ignored?

All these symptoms are usually not specific and can be combined with general digestive or period related complaints, making its early diagnosis difficult. Ovarian cancer is a silent killer, as its symptoms are quite mild and easily ignored. Symptoms are ignored due to these reasons-

  • Little known about ovarian cancer and its symptoms
  • The symptoms are similar to those of less serious conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or hormonal disorders
  •  There are no good early detection tests for ovarian cancer

Risk Factors

  • Women over 40 years of age, especially those aged 50–79 years
  • Women with a family history of ovarian, breast, endometrial, or colorectal cancer
  • Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes
