Gorakhpur Zoo Gets Ready to Welcome 2 Elephants from Dudhwa & Pilibhit
The Shaheed Ashfaqulla Khan Zoological Park in Gorakhpur is gearing up to introduce two majestic new residents to its expanding wildlife family. The zoo administration, in close coordination with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, is finalizing logistical arrangements to transport two elephants from the Terai landscapes of Dudhwa National Park and Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. Slated to arrive during the first week of October, the pachyderms will be permanently accommodated in a specialized natural habitat within the biological park, marking a major milestone for eastern Uttar Pradesh’s premier wildlife conservation and ecotourism center.
Inside UP's First Dedicated 10,000-Square-Meter Elephant Enclosure
To guarantee optimal living conditions and veterinary care, the biological park has constructed Uttar Pradesh's first full-scale elephant enclosure spanning an expansive 10,000 square meters. The purpose-built sanctuary includes three covered night resting shelters, three elevated feeding platforms, one natural unpaved water body alongside a paved wading pool, and high-pressure overhead shower installations for thermal comfort during peak summer months. It is integrated with two Elephant Restraining Devices (ERDs) for humane medical treatment alongside a dedicated, round-the-clock wildlife multi-specialty hospital equipped with surgical diagnostics.
Safe Haven for Aging Working Elephants and Calves
The Forest Department historically deploys departmentally trained elephants across Dudhwa and Pilibhit tiger reserves for forest patrolling, anti-poaching operations, and tracking conflict big cats like tigers and leopards in agricultural sugar cane fields. While the Agra Elephant Rescue Centre run by Wildlife SOS caters primarily to rescued captive animals, the new facility in Gorakhpur provides a safe, quiet retirement space for aging forest department elephants and vulnerable young calves who require sheltered environments away from difficult field conditions.
CM Yogi Adityanath to Inaugurate Phase 2 Rescue Facility
Following the safe arrival, quarantine screening, and behavioral acclimatization of the two elephants, the forest department and zoo management plan to host Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to formally inaugurate the second phase of the Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. An official invitation has been forwarded to the Chief Minister's office for the inaugural ceremony, underscoring the state leadership's focus on modernizing zoological parks and expanding biodiversity conservation infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh.
Wildlife Week Celebrations Kick Off from October 2
The impending arrival coincides with the statewide commencement of Wildlife Week starting on Friday, October 2. Gorakhpur Zoo authorities have curated an open schedule of public awareness activities, including on-the-spot painting competitions, thematic rangoli contests, biodiversity photography displays, and wildlife quizzes. The interactive events are open to school children, university students, and nature enthusiasts to promote environmental stewardship, foster wildlife protection ethics, and celebrate the biological diversity of Uttar Pradesh.
