Ayodhya’s 10th Deepotsav Breaks Precedent: Local Ramlila Troupes to Share Stage
Marking a major cultural milestone in the decade-long journey of the festival of lights, the upcoming 10th edition of Ayodhya Deepotsav is set to feature indigenous Ramlila troupes from the holy city on the main stage alongside international performers for the first time. Historically, international troupes have been accorded the prime spotlight during the grand theatrical showcase. However, reviewing event preparations on Monday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued directives to district authorities and event organizers to ensure that grassroots performers from Ramnagari are formally integrated into the headline programming. This strategic inclusion aims to transform the 10th Deepotsav into a dynamic platform where traditional temple-town devotion converges with global theatrical traditions, fostering artistic collaboration and elevating regional folk artists onto an international stage.
Cross-Border Ramayana Traditions: Troupes From 5 Countries Gear Up for Ayodhya
The international segment of the 10th Deepotsav will feature cultural delegations from South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Laos, and Thailand, each staging episodes of the Ramayana in accordance with their distinct cultural heritage, regional choreography, and performance styles. Diplomatic and cultural coordination is also underway to integrate additional artistic troupes from the Philippines and Russia into the schedule. By staging diverse interpretations—ranging from Southeast Asian masked dance-dramas to traditional South Asian folk tellings—the festival highlights the global footprint of the epic, demonstrating how the values and narratives of the Ramayana have transcended geographical borders across centuries.
Technical Exchange and Modern Stagecraft: CM Yogi Directs Invites for 63 Registered Groups
The central objective behind uniting regional and global performers is to facilitate an active exchange of stage techniques, modern lighting design, acoustic balancing, and contemporary narrative presentation. Chief Minister Adityanath instructed that local artists must have the opportunity to observe and adopt advanced production methodologies from visiting international troupes while preserving the sacred authenticity of local dialectical dohas (couplets) and traditional musical meters. Following the executive directive, formal invitations are being extended to all 63 Ramlila groups and 10 dedicated Bhajan mandalis currently registered with the Ayodhya Research Institute (Ayodhya Shodh Sansthan). Cultural programmers have been instructed to ensure that all musical interludes, poetic recitations, and theatrical acts remain strictly aligned with the sanctified festive ambiance of the occasion.
A Decade of Evolution: Elevating Ayodhya’s Cultural Diplomacy on the World Stage
The inclusion of Ayodhya's home-grown artists in the 10th Deepotsav marks the culmination of ten years of cultural diplomacy that has transformed the festival from a local illumination event into an internationally recognized spectacle. Over the past decade, the annual celebrations have continuously expanded in scope, drawing global dignitaries, tourism footfalls, and media attention to Ramnagari. By creating a shared platform where local traditionalists share the stage with international artists, the 10th Deepotsav establishes a sustainable ecosystem for regional heritage performers, bridging age-old oral traditions with modern production standards and reinforcing Ayodhya's identity as the spiritual and cultural capital of the Ramayana tradition.
