News Topical, Digital Desk : The cabinet has approved a decision to increase the honorarium of Shikshamitras and part-time instructors working in council schools. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced this on Teachers' Day, September 5th, last year, and it has now been implemented from April 1st.
The increased honorarium will be transferred to their bank accounts starting May 1st. Under this scheme, Shikshamitras working in council schools will now receive 18,000 rupees per month, and part-time instructors will receive 17,000 rupees per month. Previously, Shikshamitras were receiving 10,000 rupees and instructors 9,000 rupees.
Informing about the cabinet decision, Minister of State for Basic Education Sandeep Singh said that there are currently 1,42,929 Shiksha Mitras working in the state. Of these, the honorarium of 1,29,332 Shiksha Mitras has been shared 60:40 between the central and state governments under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. The honorarium increase will result in an additional expenditure of ₹1,138.12 crore, which will be borne by the state government.
In addition, there are 13,597 Shiksha Mitras whose honorarium is fully paid by the state government. The state government will also bear an additional burden of ₹119.65 crore for these students. Meanwhile, 24,717 part-time instructors are employed in 13,769 upper primary schools in the state.
They will also directly benefit from this honorarium increase. The government will bear an additional expenditure of ₹217.50 crore for their increased honorarium. This increase in honorarium for Shiksha Mitras and instructors will impose an additional financial burden of over ₹1,475 crore on the state government, but it will provide financial relief to a large number of education workers.
This is how the honorarium of Shikshamitras kept increasing
- Shikshamitras were appointed on 11-month contract on May 26, 1999.
- Honorarium of Rs 1500 per month at the time of appointment in the year 2001.
- Year 2002: It became Rs 2250.
- Year 2005: During Mulayam Singh government, honorarium increased to Rs 2400.
- Year 2007: Mayawati government increased it to three thousand per month.
- Year 2014-15: The then SP government adjusted trained Shikshamitras and made them assistant teachers, due to which their salary increased to between Rs 30 to 40 thousand.
- Year 2017: After the Supreme Court cancelled the adjustment, Shiksha Mitras returned to their original honorarium of Rs 3500.
- Year 2017: Yogi government increased the honorarium to Rs 10,000.
- Year 2025: Announcement of increase in honorarium by the Chief Minister on September 5.
- Year 2026: Honorarium of Rs 18 thousand applicable from April 1, Cabinet approval.
