
News Topical, Digital Desk : The Allahabad High Court will pronounce its verdict on the petition of late Mukhtar Ansari's son and former MLA Abbas Ansari on Wednesday, 20 August 2025 at 2:00 pm. Immediately after this, it will become clear whether there will be a by-election on the Mau Sadar assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh or Abbas Ansari will remain the MLA.
The High Court had reserved the decision on July 30 after the arguments of both the sides were completed. A single bench of Justice Sameer Jain will pronounce the verdict. Abbas Ansari has filed a petition demanding cancellation of the 2-year sentence awarded to him by the MP MLA Special Court Mau.
In the case of inflammatory speech during the assembly elections in the year 2022, the MP MLA Court Mau had imposed a sentence of 2 years and a fine of 3000 on 31 May. On this basis, he lost his MLA post on 1 June 2025. After being convicted by the court and being sentenced to two years, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly decided to end Abbas's membership within a few hours. The Principal Secretary of the Assembly had issued a notice, in which the Mau seat was declared vacant.

After this, the court of District Judge Mau rejected the appeal of Abbas Ansari on July 5. Then Abbas Ansari filed a petition in the High Court challenging the order of District Judge Mau.
Let us tell you that in the 2022 assembly elections, Abbas Ansari contested on the ticket of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party. In that election, the Samajwadi Party had an alliance with Subhaspa. In the alliance, the SP had given the Mau Sadar seat to Subhaspa.
What was the matter?
During the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Abbas Ansari made a statement in a public meeting which was considered provocative and threatening to the officials. He had said that after coming to power, 'everyone will be held accountable.' After the statement, the Election Commission banned his campaigning. Also, a case was registered in the Kotwali Nagar police station area.
