News Topical, Digital Desk : Three bills implementing women's reservations are expected to be introduced on Thursday, March 16. This will also include a bill for delimitation. Delimitation means increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies in the states.

Based on the 2011 census, one estimate suggests that the number of Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh could increase from 80 to 140. It's also important to note that the number of women's seats is expected to be 46. 

Meanwhile, the number of Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, currently 48, could increase to 79, with 26 seats reserved for women. In Bihar, the number of Lok Sabha seats could increase from 40 to 73, with 24 reserved for women. Furthermore, the number of Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh is expected to increase from 29 to 51, with 17 seats reserved for women.

In Gujarat, the number of Lok Sabha seats could increase from 26 to 43, with 14 likely to be reserved for women. In Rajasthan, the number of seats could increase from 25 to 48, with 16 constituencies likely to be reserved for women.

In Jharkhand, the number of seats will increase from 14 to 23, with eight seats likely to be reserved for women. In the past five elections, 45 women were elected as MPs in 2004, 59 in 2009, 62 in 2014, 78 in 2019, and 74 in 2024. This number could increase to 281 in 2029.

Which three bills is the government bringing?

The three bills that the government is going to bring include the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-first Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026. 

Amidst all this, a meeting of India Bloc floor leaders decided that the opposition would oppose all three bills. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA has appealed to everyone to avoid politicizing the issue and ensure the passage of the bills.
