News Topical, Digital Desk : Cancer is a serious disease that can strike anyone. It has become a global concern, making it extremely important to prevent it. There are many types of cancer, affecting different parts of the body. Colorectal cancer is one of these, and it is a serious form of the disease.

A recent study has revealed a key symptom of colorectal cancer. This new study identified rectal bleeding as the most important risk factor for colorectal cancer in adults under 50, increasing the risk by up to 850%. Let's learn more about this study.

What does the study say?

Research conducted at the University of Louisville Health found that rectal bleeding is not common in people under the age of 50. The study analyzed the medical records of 443 patients under the age of 50 who underwent colonoscopy between 2021 and 2023. Nearly half of the patients screened were diagnosed with early colorectal cancer  . Of all the symptoms, rectal bleeding emerged as the clearest warning sign.

What do experts say?

Senior research associate Dr. Sandra Kawalukas (colorectal surgeon) says that rectal pain isn't always serious. A person complaining of rectal pain doesn't necessarily need a colonoscopy. However, if there's bleeding, it shouldn't be ignored, especially if the person is in their 30.

Genetic factors were also important.

The study also found that a family history of cancer doubles the risk of colorectal cancer, but it's not the only factor. Genetic factors were found in only 13% of the cases studied; the remaining patients had no family history of cancer.

Get a colonoscopy done immediately if you notice any symptoms.

Experts often recommend getting a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer only after the age of 45. However, given the increasing incidence of this cancer, it's now important to get a colonoscopy as soon as possible, even if you're under the screening threshold.
