News Topical, Digital Desk : Punjab News: A poorly maintained road in the Phillaur area of Punjab's Jalandhar district once again resulted in a fatality. A woman died in a tragic road accident late last night. Following the incident, angry residents took to the streets, protesting and demanding strict action against the administration. Seeing the situation escalate, police and administrative officials arrived at the scene and attempted to pacify the situation.

Woman falls, truck crushes her head

The incident occurred at midnight in the village of Nagar, near the Nawanshahr Road. The road has been broken for a long time, and rainwater and sewage from houses accumulate on the road. Residents have complained to the authorities several times, but no solution has been found. Late Friday night, the woman was riding a bike with her son. Due to the accumulated water on the road, the bike skidded, and both fell onto the road. A truck coming from behind ran over the woman's head. The woman died on the spot due to head injuries. Her son survived with minor injuries. The woman has not been identified yet.

People blocked the road, the road was closed for the whole night.

As soon as news of the accident spread, villagers gathered in large numbers on the road. At 11 p.m., they completely blocked the Nawanshahr Road from Apra to Phillaur, causing a massive traffic jam. Police tried to persuade the villagers, but the villagers remained adamant on their demands.

Residents said the waterlogging problem on the road had been ongoing for months. They complained to the District Magistrate's Office (BDPO) several times, but neither the road was repaired nor any drainage system was put in place. This negligence ultimately led to the woman's death.

BDPO suspended, villagers insist on action

Following the public outcry, the administration swung into action. The Deputy Tehsildar and senior officials arrived at the scene and began talking to the people. The people stated clearly that they would not allow the road to be reopened until action was taken against the responsible officer.

After lengthy negotiations, the administration suspended the Block Development Officer (BDPO) of Phillaur with immediate effect. Officials assured that road repairs and drainage work would begin immediately.

People said – accidents happen every day, now a solution is needed

The protesters stated that the road is constantly waterlogged, making it slippery. They have been involved in numerous accidents. They stated that these accidents are the result of administrative negligence, and that repairing the road is now urgent. Officials are preparing to complete the post-mortem and hand over the bodies to the families. The police have registered a case and begun further investigation.
